Natasza Wins Again!
Wow! What a fun day. If you haven’t been to an all girl pro snowboard contest then you are missing out. Especially when it comes to a Roxy Chicken Jam. “I think it is awesome because it is a girl contest and for once we have a contest for us girls - all about us - the attention is for us because Roxy is girls. Last year I was really impressed and this year was even better. I will be back next year,” said second place winner Priscilla Levac.
This contest stacks the best pro riders from around the world to compete against each other for a prize purse of $20,000 USD in a Jam format. The five qualified riders from yesterday’s qualification round joined the twenty-five invited riders in the semi-finals this morning. After a yummy Mexican lunch the eight winners of the semi-finals met up on the top of the course to show off their talents.
The final session was as follows: in 1st place, the unstoppable 4x Chicken Jam champ Natasza Zurek (CAN), getting 2nd for the second year in a row was Priscilla Levac (CAN), 3rd Cheryl Maas (NL), 4th Jenny Jones (UK), 5th qualifying champ CC Curry (USA), 6th Tara Dakides (USA), 7th Silvia Mittenmuller (GER) and in 8th place Leanne Pelosi (CAN).
The story of the day was seeing amateur CC Curry make it all the way from the qualification round to the finals where she beat her idol Tara Dakides. Tara was also amazed to see how good CC was, “It was an awesome contest I was trippin’ on how many girls were out there. There were a couple of girls that impressed me on strong style like CC, who I never heard of before, and Cheryl Mass definitely has good style, “ said Tara Dakides.
Cheryl Maas not only stood on the podium in third place but she also won a check for $1000 bucks from Boost Mobile for the best trick of the day. ”I guess it was the backside 7, I was trying for a nine, but I didn’t stop it. I was here last year as well, I think the course is really cool because they made the jumps bigger and the boxes were good to jib on the end. Everybody is here and this is a jam session so you can just ride and have fun instead of stressing about two runs or something,” said Cheryl stoked on her wins.
The reigning Chicken Jam champ Natasza Zurek, who has in fact won every Roxy Chicken Jam event both in Europe and the USA was one of the favorites on the course today, “It felt fun and I saw some progression. It was flat light so I was trying to keep it fun and stay pumped out there. ‘Cause flat light is usually not that rad, but then I saw the other girls riding and they were going for it so I was like, ‘yeah,’ I am going to go for it too. My favorite trick that I did today was a front side 7 melon. I like the chicken Jam because it is really taken seriously by the people who built the course and by the riders who showed up and by the media who later give us coverage,” said Natasza.
